Tucked behind a beautifully restored early twentieth-century Craftsman home in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, this garden reimagines an underutilized backyard as a space that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

From the outset, the client's aspiration was simple: create a garden that feels as though it has always belonged to the house. Rather than imposing a contemporary landscape onto the property, the design seeks to uncover a natural extension of the home's character—one that feels authentic to its history while supporting the rhythms of modern life.

The garden draws inspiration from two seemingly different sources. The first is the enduring charm and craftsmanship of the historic residence itself. The second is the romantic atmosphere and saturated palette of Sophia Coppola's Maria Antoinette—a world of abundance, softness, celebration, and fleeting summer beauty. Together, these influences inform a landscape that feels both rooted and whimsical, refined yet relaxed.

Conceived as the center of summer living, the garden is organized around cooking, dining, and gathering with friends. Outdoor rooms unfold between terraces and planting beds, creating intimate spaces for afternoon aperitifs, long dinners beneath the evening light, and spontaneous conversations that linger well into the night.

Planting is designed to reach its fullest expression during Seattle's most cherished season, from late June through early September. Waves of flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and seasonal annuals create an ever-changing composition of color, texture, and movement. Soft pinks, apricots, creams, mauves, and deep burgundies mingle throughout the garden, producing moments of surprise and delight as blooms emerge, fade, and give way to new displays.

The result is a garden that feels simultaneously established and ephemeral—a landscape that honors the history of the home while embracing the joy, abundance, and impermanence of summer.
